[Yaesu] Best Yaesu HF rig

Interesting discussion.
I'd be tempted to go for the MK5 field. I actually own both the 200w MK5 and
the field, and have used all the others at various times. My opinion is
based on CONTESTS.
I would immediately disqualify the FT990 and the FT920 because of their
ergonomics, lack of a 2nd receiver and either lack of or implementation of
DSP.
The FT1000D is undoubtedly a fantastic rig but comes in at number 4 in my
line-up. Basically it's lack of DSP is the only real reason. It's overall
selectivity is certainly on par with the best of them.
That leaves us with the three FT1Kmp flavors - At number three would be the
FT1000mp. There is not a lot between these three so here's where it's pretty
subjective. At this point, we'll assume each rig is fully loaded with
filters and also has the Inrad roofing filter. This places these three head
and shoulders above most rigs except the much much more expensive Icom and
Yaesu flagships.
I used to prefer the FT1000mp implementation of DSP and also its
implementation of filter selection, primarily because I used a Kenwood TS
850 for years, so independent switching of filters was I thought the way to
go.
Then I bought the field. At first I did not like the filter selection
concept, but once I really started using the rig, I realised that it's very
very efficient and I can run on a frequency for hours without ever having to
do much in the way of filter switching.
That leaves the field and the MK5. Nothing really between them, but I happen
to have a preference for the field - mainly because it simply plugs into the
110V outlet - and I can get the covers off and on quickly.
So it gets my vote - but only after it's loaded with filters and all mods
are installed.
Regards,
Dean - 8P6SH / 8P2K
