Sean,
There are at least a couple of ways you can fill up the filter slots.
One is to buy new ones from somewhere such as Inrad. I hear they are
excellent and reasonably priced. Another is to watch eBay for Yaesu
filters that people have removed from their FT-1000s to make room for
new ones. These are quite good, original Yaesu, and are much less
expensive than new ones. Compare the specs and see what is worth it for
you. Any way you go, the cascaded filters make a big difference.
There is much more to a D model than just filters, though. Other major
items I believe the D has that did not come standard in the
FT-1000(plain) are the TCXO and the BPF-1 for the sub-receiver. The
back section of the operating manual lists all options (section 6).
About the only option the FT-1000D did not come with is the XF-455MC
500Hz CW filter for the sub-receiver. These are also plentiful on
eBay. I picked one up there for my FT1kD last summer.
