I don't understand why. I've owned the 990 and the 1000, the 990 is just
average, not bad but not a 1000 either. I've had 2 920's and would take one any
day over the Kenwood 940 or the FT990. The 920 which is later technology, has
the best Noise Reduction over them all, including the 1000. The 940's have just
become too old to be reliable and don't have the receiver of the later rigs.

Both the TS-940 and the FT-990 are fine radios. The only knock I know of against
either one is that some 940's have developed intermittent problems due to faulty
feed through holes in the printed circuit boards. Perhaps someone else can shed
more light on this and knows if Kenwood fixed the PCB problem in later radios.
Many owners of the FT-990 believe it to be even better than the FT-1000D which
was Yaesu's top of the line radio for about 12 years.
In general, I don't think you'd go wrong either way.
