Thanks, Mike. Yeah, not telling the dealer is actually one of the pluses of
doing it this way. Instead of having cables run all over the place, I would
be able to use the existing wiring connections, buttons, displays, etc. That
would actually involve messing with the car less than the normal installation
method.
Basically, the radio would need power--which it always would--and to be connected
to the interface 'box'. The box would connecto the the existing plug for the
cellular adapter--which is conveniently in the trunk. That plug as the audio
from the Mic, the bus which conveys the button press 'events', and which would
allow the interface to send text to the car's radio display. Oh, it does look
like it won't be possible to use the sound system for ham radio audio, but there
is at least, a mute signal which can be pulled low by the interface when there
is something on the channel.
If I can't get audio in and out of the rig, there's no point in doing any of
this. If I can tune and find what the current frequency is, then the more
complex interface to the car becomes reasonable.
If only there was a simple (headless) FM rig that had a simple computer control
interface... :)
