If it is a smaller shaft, I have used aluminum foil to build
it out and in some cases...tooth picks.. Unless you are
really rough on your knobs it will last for years.

Is there a chemical that will work for this or should I be trying to use heat or ? I am trying to switch the inserts to accomodate a different size of shaft. Any help or suggestion on this would be most appreciated.
