Hi Royce,
=20 Cant say that the tuning has been stiff, but the click step=
tuning is a bit annoying when tuning over a big frequency change.
=20 Having pulled the little white box apart, it looks like it
is a preset pressure on the ball bearing. (a bent spring holding it
up).I guess you could remove the ball bearing, and this would give a
"freewheel" type of tuning, but as to the accuracy of the tuning steps
after the mod I don't know, the ball step gives you the tuning step, if
you know what I mean, and removing it MAY cause the tuning steps to be
more difficult to control.
=20 The little arms that make contact with the "radials" in the=
switch are preset, so I don't think any "shorting" of them is possible.
To do this you would need to take the front of the radio off and either
unsolder the tuning control or carefully undo the bent tabs that hold
the tuning box shut ,lift out the shaft assembly , and if your lucky the
ball bearing wont disappear in to the living room carpet like mine did.
Remove the offending ball, and carefully put it all back together again.
Look at about 2 hours for the job.
Hope this helps
Best wishes =20
