hello all,
=09 a few weeks ago i asked about a problem with the tuning encoder on my=
=20ageing ft747.Well i have managed to find a couple of extra hours and h=
ave found the following.
1.the encoder is mechanical in operation. there is a small gold disc of 2=
=20concentric radials , each with a contact that goes to one of the gold =
pins on the external part of the white plastic case .(take a look at the =
base of the "miricle whip" antenna (looks a bit like that)
2. the indented wheel that this is fastened to (like a plastic "cog")is g=
iven the click step by a spring mounted ball bearing, that i discovered i=
s not captive, took me 20 mins to find it after it went ping .
3. the problem seems to stem from the fact that the teeth on this cog hav=
e become gummed up with what seems like a grease/ plastic dust compound. =
i have managed to clean the gunge off , but needs a solvent / degreasing =
agent to do the job properly, the stiffness has returned and all seems we=
ll. the tabs securing the case seem quite sturdy and have folded back ove=
r ok.electrical test will follow.
