The RS-232 is for using the DSP unit as a RTTY modem. You use any normal
terminal program for it that you'd use for any modem. Hyperterminal is
included in Windows and will work. The DSP unit itself decodes and encodes
the RTTY.

I have never heard this before. "Maybe" the current firmware of the
DSP599zx can do it, but the 59Y stopped production about 3 years or so ago.
I really don't think either would do it. What sort of operating data are
you looking for? The unit is basically a DSP audio filter that does some
amazing stuff. Beyond that, I don't know why I'd want to hook it to a
computer.
I've owned my 599 for about 4 years and have never even used the RTTY modem
feature.
