Most of these msgs have a double extension usch as newgame.exe.scr and are
either about 71k or 128k in file size. You are right to just delete them
even if they are from someone you would normally trust.
You can download AVG antivirus software for free from www.grisoft.com. Its
free and seems to do a pretty good job. You can also get ZoneAlarm
www.zonelabs.com for free as well. Zone Alarm is a good firewall.
