Probably still in this price class, I would recommend the Yaesu FT-890.
Now, I'll probably be chided for my choice, but here goes.
Over the past four years I've had my '890 at several Field Days and a
couple of Sweepstakes multi-op efforts. Now the folks I have worked
with aren't hardcore contesters so many haven't used more than one or
two radios in their ham career. I have found the radio requires a
minimal amount teaching and handholding to operate properly. I have
received many comments on how easy the radio is to use.
I also like it because it is compact and has an excellent receiver.
Mine is equipped with the narrow Yaesu SSB filter and a 400 Hz CW filter
and have found the radio handles both modes very well. The dynamic
range is very good, better than I expected, and I've never noticed any
filter blowby. But then I've only used the radio out here in KS. A
contest weekend on the east coast or in Europe would probably reveal its
shortcomings.
For my money it's been a tough radio to beat.
