[Yaesu] FT100D and PSK

The fact that you are on (maybe) LSB as opposed to USB is of no relevance to
this problem. The problem appears that one of the modes you have the rig
in, or even the connector is wrong. It sounds like you are not producing a
PSK31 signal. Your radio should be producing SSB as it would with the input
from the microphone. You may be producing a FSK signal instead. Or some
other digital mode variation.
I'm not familiar with the particular radio you're using, but if you have
other connection choices see if you have one that is line audio. The input
you should be using is audio - not digital. The "digitizing" is done by the
sound card.
If you have no choice - there is no audio line in, then you may have to use
the mic. input. That's not as desirable as you may have to work with your
mic gain control to achieve the desired drive for PSK31 and that may very
well be different from the drive needed for normal voice operation. If you
have the possibility of using line input, separate from the mic. input, then
any settings changes from one mode to the other will not affect the other
mode.
Once you are transmitting and sure that RF is actually being generated, a
quick and dirty test for proper audio adjustment can be done by observing
your RF output level on a wattmeter in the "Tune" mode. That is, using that
function of your digital mode software. I use DigiPan, and it has a Tune
mode. First, set the RF power level of your rig to achieve the desired RF
output level. Say, 50 watts for example. Then set your audio level using
the Windows volume controls (for the sound card) to achieve the desired RF
level in the Tune mode. Say 30 watts. Then, while transmitting characters,
note that the RF output level should be one half what it was in the Tune
mode. It's not a perfect means of telling how well your levels are set, but
it's going to be pretty close. Make sure that your speech processor is OFF,
and if you can, monitor your ALC during transmit to insure that you have NO
(That's NONE) ALC action. Be sure to ask for honest signal reports and
reports on your signal quality.
Once you are transmitting properly, then, the choice of sideband to use is
made on different factors. If you both are on the same frequency (you each
can tune in the other's signal) then technically it does not matter which
sideband you're on. There are of course other considerations based on
knowing where you are in relationship to other stations and for those, it is
good to be on the same sideband. Typically, most will be on USB.
