[Yaesu] General Radio Question

Hi Tom and all in the group,
I think I can offer a unique perspective for this question. When I started
VHF/UHF contesting a year ago I had an FT-847 multi-band rig and soon found
that it was somewhat a pain to have to switch from band to band then hit
scan or manually tune thru to find activity. Another limitation was the lack
of any substantial power levels without having amps for each band, and at
350ドル-1000 each can get expensive. Then again in some rigs one has a single
antenna port and must also switch between antennas as well as bands. So far
a lot of work just at the shack and still haven't called CQ yet!
That was a year ago, now I have 3 rigs FT-920 HF & 6M, IC-271H and IC-471H
(for 2M and 70cm respectively), and I must say that this arrangement is much
better ergonomically as I can put all in a scan mode (or manually scan
thru). I have more respectable power levels out of each box at 100 watts
each, and adding amps is much easier for HRO but not so for the mid range
amps in the 300-500 watt class bricks. But, the next logical move for my
arrangement is HRO 1KW.
On the down side of arrangement #2 with 3 rigs is obvious S-P-A-C-E, you
have to have room for the extra rigs in your shack. Another is having to
sort through which speaker to respond to when all of the rigs get pileups at
once.
There are PRO's and CON's for each arrangement and I guess it boils down to
the individual and what he prefers or can physically control as an operator.
What I would suggest if one can get to a multi rig station during a contest
and give it a run or watch a run thru and then try the same with a single
multi-band rig. This would be the easiest way for someone considering
contesting to choose one rig or several rigs.
I hope this helps.

Subject: [Yaesu] General Radio Question
Here is the debate question:
Is it better to have a radio for each band, or a multi-band radio, in
general?
I have heard good and bad arguments both ways but was interested in what
your opinions will be since this is a active group.
Thanks,
Tom
