You da' man ! All that seems to be required is an over-install of the Logic
8 CDROM and choose yes to over-writing whatever file. You're left with a
repaired CURRENT version, tables and all. So far, after running for a couple
of hours, all is well.
Thanks again.

Easiest way is to re-install from your CD into the same directory then
reapply an earlier version if you have it. That way settings and license
are preserved. I still have .78 here... but you might want to go back a
few versions....
First you do a backup (or 2) first.... and make a copy of the whole
Logic directory tree to keep for a few weeks in case you find you have
forgotten something or to revert to the current version.
The only thing to watch for are customized reports and custom updates to
the Prefix table. If you need to preserve these it can get more
complicated. If you still have the problem... just copy the saved
directory tree back over it and you will be back where you started... or
you can re-apply the latest update.... should come to the same thing
unless you have made a lot of customizations.
In any case, it's a good dry run for the inevitable day when the disk
drive dies ;-)
