I have my safety log on an attached USB hard drive which Windows
periodically backs up other files to as well.

Hello & Seasons Greetings Fellow Logic Users,
Just did mine last week when the same thing happened. I was able to get in
using the WindowsXP recovery disk in DOS, I attempted to copy files to
another undamaged slave drive and received error messages that some files
were corrupted. Additionally, the DOS command "fixboot" generated a
"successful" notification but the drive would not even act like a slave or
boot. Luckily, the backup files on other drives and a few USB plugs that I
keep onhand for such an unprecidented emergency, did the trick. With the
exception of a notice of an index error, re-indexing the log did the trick
and we are back on track without losing a single logged QSO.
There is no insurance better than regularly backing up your precious data &
other files on external drives. Yes, plural. One never knows for sure does
one. hihi
