[Logic] IRQ shortage

Hi Harris,
Some com cards do not support IRQ sharing, so you would need to be sure that
yours does in order to avoid the IRQ conflicts.
For the ones that do, you need to be sure that your PC motherboard supports
them. There is one MFG of multi-port serial cards, Lava, in Canada
(www.lavalink.com). They have multiport serial cards (4-ports Lavaport Quad
and Quattro-PCI, 8-ports Octopus-550), pricing in US is about 100ドル for the
4-port boards and about 130ドル for the 8-port. I have read ham reports they
work well. Sadly, they are not compatible with my motherboard (KT-133),
their website has compatibility data. There are many other multi-port
serial card manufacturers, so look around.
I opted to go USB. A little caution here as well since not all USB-RS232
converters are alike either. I purchased one that worked like a champ (from
Inland, about 50ドル US), BUT, emitted more noise than a herd of sheep, wiped
out most of the 2m VHF band....useless. Then found another variety from
Purple Computing (www.pfranc.com) that is as clean as a whistle BUT does not
handshake with my FT1000MP (yet). What did work was the TNC and Rigblaster
Plus, both flawless with the USB-RS232 converter(s) - I love them !! Also
check out the PDA website, Dennis has a USB-Serial converter cable
available. I have not heard any reports on compatibility and/or noise
issues. Maybe others on the reflector have tried them and could report.
I left the rig on the real com port until time allows me to figure out
what's going on (I always suspect operator error first,). Purple Computing
seems to have some pull with getting drivers tweaked, and seems to be able
to get updated drivers on their website, and, more importantly, they remind
me of PDA, so, I have chosen to play with them awhile. I have no interest
in purple computing, but the cable is built very well, and also has some
diagnostic leds on them so at least you know they are alive and
communicating. Cost is near average at about 28ドル US each.
My system is an AMD Athlon 1.2Ghz running Win2k Pro.
The combination of USB and standard COM ports works for me and my particular
system, I'm sure you will get many responses from others who have other
experiences and solutions.

Subject: [Logic] IRQ shortage
I am running LOGic 5.3, a Rigblaster and hopefully a Kantronics KPC-3 on my
PC. Yesterday I added an extra serial card (COM ports 3 & 4). When all was
said and done I had to disable LPT1 to avoid IRQ conflicts. I have noticed
some IRQs can be shared but I seem to have run out. Any suggestions would be
most welcome.
