[Kenwood] TS-450S:Hearing signal on both upper and lower sidebands. Also no 500Hz filter operation

Hi all,
I posted this a couple of weeks ago in the TS-690/450/850 Yahoo Group
and decided to post it here too in case someone reading this is not
subscribed
to that list.
I have a TS-450S which had the dreaded IF board cap failures plus a
horrible attempt from the previous owner to repair eaten traces mainly in
the audio out section (#18 gauge wire to substitute some of the traces).
I replaced all of the caps in the area with higher voltage rating ones
(25V). I removed all of the crystal filters and cleaned under
the boards and filters and did a visual on the filters. All seemed ok.
I had to repair many traces that had been eaten with #30 Kynar
wire-wrap wire.
Now I find that on the "thru" setting, I am able to copy any signal on
both upper and lower sidebands. I am also not able to select the 500Hz
filter. It goes to the filter according to the display but no sound from
the speaker. I did a factory reset and re-enabled the filters that I
have installed (full boat complement) but no joy. The filters work in
another
radio so I am sure that is not the problem.
I also repaired the horrific previous owners work with the same #30
Kynar wire.
It looked like he used heavy construction tools to attempt repairs to
the audio out section!
So it might seem that I have two issues but maybe only one. I am unsure.
When I first got this radio the entire area where the crystal filters
are were covered with the capacitors goo. I cleaned and cleaned but
found the area to be slightly conductive (measured from any trace in the
area to an empty section of the PCB). I finally got real aggressive with
Alcohol and intense scrubbing with a synthetic scouring pad.
This cured the conductivity issue but nothing else. BTW. I did the
cleaning with all of the filters removed.
I am at my wits end with this problem. Has anyone experienced this sort
of behavior with
this model radio?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. In fact, I will offer up my first
born son! (He's 23 and is a couch potato but he's real good with the
XBox and a good kid nonetheless). :-)
And yes, I would like to purchase this board if someone has one to sell!
