Hello.I have joined the Kenwood list.
Quite simply, back when I first got licensed my first rig was a TS 820 and I had a great time with it for the first couple years, working on my code on 80 m novice area and so on. But time marched on and I wanted the WARC bands, so I sold the rig. That rig, by the way, was a great rig that at one time had been owned by and used by VE3EJ, who was and is one of the top contesters, bar none. He has been on the CQ cover etc and you will ALWAYS find him/his contest station in the listings, ranked high. And he has an amazing antenna farm!
Anyhow, rest assured, that rig did great service in contests in its time.
I got a hankering to get back to that hybrid radio type, for a bit, and do know they were good things.
I have been able get an 820 and 830 both, but it has taken a bit of time to procure CW filters from some used sources, and then some more time for me to get those filters into them.
Now that I cleared off some desk space, I have had them powered up. They hear well it seems, and put out the number of watts as intended, so drivers and finals and all seem fine. However, each of them has one odd thing.
The 820, when you plug a mono 1/4 plug into the CW jack, emits a solid sidetone. It does not key the rig in CW, and this is with VOX on or off, SEND or RCV.Any idea why?
The 830 seems to exhibit slow recovery of the audio after CW keying. This is the same whether AGC is slow, fast or off. With the audio turned up it SEEMS to me that if I have the rig on the dummy load the audio level remains the same after keying (same hiss / white noise) but if I have an antenna on it then the recovery after keying is slowish.. the band noise/signals seem to take a few seconds to come back to the initial level heard before the keying.
Thanks for any ideas.
