[Kenwood] Problem with TS-50S

I just obtained a nice looking TS-50S and AT-50S but there is a couple of
problems with the transceiver.
When I power it on, the display lights but has poor contrast and there is no
audio for 15-20 seconds and then it slowly comes up. When I key the
transmitter in any mode, the display dims like the power is off. The TX LED
is on during transmit and the voltage at the rear power connector is 13.4
VDC during transmit so it's not a power supply problem. Has anyone
experienced a similar problem? I have not removed the cover at this point
and thought I would seek help from the group before diving in. I do have the
service manual. Any help appreciated.
