Use the variac, on that TS930, bring the input AC supply voltage up in
stages to the line voltage, and leave the rig running at each intermediate
stage, perhaps for half an hour or so....if you apply the full voltage at
the first switch on, you may just get a "nasty brown" odour and hear some
"pops" as the electrolytics let go, before a fuse and perhaps some
transistors expire.......exercise caution, it is always the best and least
expensive route..... 73, John Cleeve. G3JVC.

Subject: [Kenwood] TS-930S question
Hi all, I bought a Kenwood TS-930S at a ham fest over the weekend in mint
condition. It hasn't been run in a very long time I think the previous owner
said over 15-20 years, it was well taken care of and is very clean inside
and outside. He told me I should put it on a variac and bring the voltage up
very slowly to protect the filter caps. What do you guys think? I've had a
lot of people tell me that radio shouldn't need that and should be fine to
just plug it in and go. I'm looking for opinions, thoughts. For what I paid,
I could do some work and replace things if I had to and still come out ahead
but I sure don't want anything to go wrong and be my fault.
