O.K. Two things can be happening here:
1). The COM port is not enabled in the bios. (You do not need a null modem).
or
2). You are trying to update the TNC or DISPLAY with the MAIN firmware.
The TNC and DISPLAY firmware are updated using the port on the back of the
display. The MAIN firmware is updated using the port on the back of the main
unit.

Subject: [Kenwood] TM-D710A Firmware Update Problem
I am attempting to update the firmware in my TM-D710A with the Kenwood
cable. I have the cable plugged into the port on the back of the display
head (not the one on the back of the radio body) and have the correct com
port selected for my computer (Com1). After powering up the radio with the
MR and TNC keys held, the prog message appears in the display. From there,
the software will not update the firmware and gives me a message that it
cannot open the com port. I have tried each of the baud rates in the
program several times, and have tried disconnecting power and replugging the
programming cable several times. I continue to get the message that it
cannot open the com port to perform the firmware update.
I would appreciate any assistance with this problem.

Bill
