[Kenwood] TS850 and SB200

An amplifier interface between the 850 and the SB-200 was suggested simply because Kenwood's 850 manual did not state what the amplifier relay contact voltage and current ratings were. Therefore, unless these figures are known, it's not a wise idea to simply connect the SB-200's REL connection to the 850.
Although there are quite a number of eBay sellers who sell interconnecting cables for various radios to amplifiers, again, the issue is whether the radio relay can withstand the amplifier's relay voltage and current.
The SB-200 operating instructions can be downloaded free from the bama website. You will have to download the DjVu reader but that too is available from the bama website links to DjVu reader.
However, in the end, it's your radio, your amplifier, and ultimately your choice to make whether you check the voltage and current rating of the 850's relay contacts and compare them with the actual SB-200's relay voltage and current ratings. I would do my homework first and not just plug the amplifier into the 850, but that's me.

Why build it at all, not needed....

The TS-850's internal linear amplifier relay is accessed at the
TS-850's REMOTE socket. Pins 2 and 4 (normally open) relay contacts are used
to control an amplifier's internal T/R relay. However, the TS-820's
manual does not indicate the relay contact's maximum voltage and current
rating.
The SB-200's T/R relay is powered from the amplifier's -120VDC negative
supply, see SB-200 schematic available on the bama website for free.
Therefore, I recommend using an amplifier relay keying circuit, external to the
TS-850, and not connect the SB-200's T/R relay directly to the TS-850. A
simple 12VDC amplifier relay interface can be built for less than 20,ドル a lot
less if you already have the 12VDC relay on hand. Radio Shack sells 12VDC relays
as well as Mouser Electronics and other Internet parts outlets. Another source
is "All Electronics", allelectronics.com, sells relays for less than
3ドル that will do the job nicely. You don't have to spend 40ドル to 50ドル for a
simple amplifier relay interface, build it yourself.

I'm not an amp person, but isn't the relay on the 850 12 volts dc, and
the SB200 around 120 volts ac? There are plenty of places that make interfaces
for such a combination. Check around, but I'm sure you do not connect an
850
direct to an SB200/SB220, etc.

Brian...
You're playing with very high voltages here. I suggest that you read the
manual for the Heathkit amp very carefully and follow the tuning instructions
to
the letter. If you have the plate voltage and current set incorrectly,
you're inviting cherry red (not good at all) and possibly arcing 572B
tubes,
which are quite expensive to replace.
You are correct about the RCA phono jack. That's the input from the exciter
(Knwd) to the amplifier.
Also, read the manual for the Knwd TS-850 as it pertains to running the radio
with an amplifier.
Good Luck and do take care with that amp. Its voltages are LETHAL.

I think I got that last one right so I taking a guess.
I do know its a Heathkit amp.
I would like to run the above combo for the upcoming ARRL 10m contest.
Any suggestions on what I need to do.
I have never ran a amp with a HF radio so I'm open to any and all
suggestions.
If its any help I do know the back of the amp has a unusual connector, not a
SO-239.
I want to say like a RCA type jack.

Brian
