[Kenwood] Kenwood ts-850s

I've just finished adding a YG-455 CN , cw filter, to my 850. When, I tuned in, on a cw station and switch in the 455 filter, weak stations disappear and strong stations are attenuated? The filter is in the correct slot and switch # 1 was turned to the ON positions , as per manuals instruction, 2,3,4 switches are OFF , as I do not have Filter #1(cn-1) or Filter # 2 (c-1) installed. Is there some else I'm required to do, to get this filter working correctly or might it be a bad filter?
