[Kenwood] Help needed with TS450 problem

Looking for some help with a problematic TS-450.
I am asking a question here on behalf of a friend so may not have the 
full picture but this is what I know.
The radio was purchased some months ago and has worked well until 
recently. Pretty much all of a sudden it has started to act up and is 
doing rather strange things. In particular the display will simply 
disappear after a few minutes and whilst power cycling of the radio 
would at one time return it to a working state that no longer seem to be 
the case. Strange involuntary auto ATU action has also been noted.
Are there any 'known' TS-450 problems that might exhibit such symptoms 
or are we all alone on this?
