The big difference in Commercial and Marine radios and Ham gear is the 
commercial operator is not allowed to control the emissions of 
Commercial and Marine radios,so they are channelized for certain freqs 
and have only a few controls .
You can convert commercial gear for ham use, but it cannot be converted 
back, you cannot convert ham gear
for commercial use ever.
