[Kenwood] TS-830S Display Problem

I'm posting this for a friend and can relay any
replies.
The TS-830S frequency display seems to work up thru
the first 300 KHz of each band, then starts to count
down to the bottom of the band frequency. At first, I
thought the VFO was backtracking, but listened to some
verifiable transmissions in the part of the bands
above the approx 300 KHz level, and it seems to be
tuning, OK, just not accurately presenting the
frequency up there. I looked in the survival guide,
but no dice. Any ideas? 
In other words, the radio works up to the top of the
frequency range, the the display counts backwards
after reaching the 300 mark
