Thanks to one and all for the answer about the gold 830's. I mentioned the findings to the seller of a 830 I was looking at. 
 He said "I was nuts" and the gold were special versions of the radio that kenwood built and were far superior to the standard 830. I thanked him for his comments.
 Amazing what people think is fact.
