Dave,
Thank you for the reply although your theory is over my head a
little, I think it accurately describes the problem.=20
I have done the AFSK level modification but that wouldn't solve the
issue of the radio seeing two microphones at the same time when the
PTT is selected.
The solution of a transformer is a complicated one because I would
have to change the impedance of both the mic on the front and the TNC
at the same time.=20
I'm thinking now more along the lines of a switching solution to
isolate one from the other.=20
The trick will be to make it automated so the operator will not have
to make a manual selection.=20
What do you and the list think of that idea? And what implementation
ideas are there?

You have a problem with the TNC loading down the mic circuit of the
TS850. The TS850 likes a high impedance microphone; your TNC is most
probably around 500-600 ohms, which in parallel with the microphone
input, you get a severe mismatch. Rtotal in a parallel resistor
circuit
it always less than the least resistance for different resistance
values. So you are loading down the TS850 mic circuit big time. You
need
a matching transformer to go from lo-z (the TNC) to hi-z (the 850).

I have the TS-850S working normally with out the PK-232 PSK connected
Digital modes work correctly with the TNC
With the TNC connected I have distorted audio when using SSB voice.
If I disconnect the cord at the TNC no voice distortion
Having the TNC on or off makes no difference nor does the power
source for the TNC
With the TNC power cord disconnected the problem still occurs.=20
