[Kenwood] R-5000 in trouble

Hello,
my beloved R-5000 acts oddly:
*sometimes* when you push the main switch, all you get is a series of dots
on the display. No digits, no reception, only AF hiss. All other display
functions are ok (time, memory, vfo etc). You act on the tuning knob and you
get it working normally - but it lasts justs some seconds before silencig
and showing dots only. After you trick with the tuning knob for a while, the
receiver works normally for a whole night.
Sometimes it works normally when you switch it on, then goes crazy after a
random time - could be half hour or more.
Is it the beginning of the end?
