Hi Tom,
The interface is a box containing a level shifter chip (Maxim MAX232-C),
some miscellaneous transistors, resistors and caps, and a couple of
connectors. They can be had at flea markets, often for 40ドル-75. They have
been out of commercial production for years.
One alternative is to build your own, which is what I did recently. There
is an article on the project in the Feb. 1993 QST. A kit is available from
FAR circuits which contains the printed circuit board, the 232 chip and the
opto-isolators. The only parts I added to that were four resistors, several
caps, a voltage regulator, some wire, two connectors, a grommet and a small
metal chassis. All that is available at Radio Shack. My project worked the
first time when connected to my TS-790. I built a second one for my TS-850,
which also checked out the first time (on the 790, the 850 is on the blink
right now due to an unrelated fault).
I can send the QST article via E-mail if you like (Adobe .pdf file), and
some pics of my interface if that would help.
Also, the original Kenwood interfaces show up for sale on eHam.net, QRZ.com
and QTH.com from time to time, often with pictures.
