Kenwood by default from the factory has the cw carrier oscillator shifted a
little and it's nearer the centered of the SSB crystal filter. That is why
you can hear a beat note on both sides of the CW signal. One side of the
beat note is usually much stronger than the other and you always want to
tune to the stronger side. If you install the optional 500 Htz CW filter I
believe it has a different center frequency and the default BFO freq will
fall on the edge of the filter skirt. That is exactly what you want! If
you don't have the optional cw filter then you can do a simple mod for
better CW work using only the built in SSB filter. It's outlined in the
operating manual. You simply moved 2 wires on the carrier board to 2
different positions. Then your CW position will be just like listing to CW
in the LSB position and it will have the steeper filter skirts. You don't
want to do that mod if you have an optional 500 Htz cw filter in the unit.
