[Dxbase] [dxbase] DXBASE new release

That is a good question. It has been almost three years since Neal bought DXbase, but all he has done, really, is to support the existing program.

In March 2012 Neal wrote on this reflector in a message titled “V10 Delay and other things”: “I will discontinue selling dxb until, AND IF, v10 is ready for prime time. I have said before that all dxb2007 customers will be licensed for v10 and will still uphold that when AND IF it comes out.” I capitalized four words in that quote for emphasis. It is, as far as I know, the first and only time that Neal alluded to the possibility that there may never be a next version of DXbase.

I worry about DXbase. Many people I used to see here are now over on the DXLab reflector. The longer we wait for a new version, the smaller the existing user base will become.

If DXbase development stops, that will be a sad day for me. Over the past few years I have tested a few other logging softwares, including two attempts to learn to like the often-recommended DXLab, but I came back to DXbase. Nothing can touch it for both ease of use, great award tracking, and great reports (many thanks to Joe).

My current plan is to keep using DXbase as long as I can, which I guess means as long as it will work with whatever the current version of Windows is. In the short term, I’m betting it will work with Windows 8 because it looks like it’s the same as Windows 7 when one gets past the new “Metro” interface.

I sincerely hope for a new version of DXbase because it does need some updating. Especially an interactive window that displays spots on a graphical bandspread dial. Many other programs now have this, and it’s a great feature.
