[Dxbase] DXBase and Windows 7 "Pain"

Hi Jim,
Interesting idea and maybe Neal or others are up for the challenge, I don't
know. But, to work, there would have to be an assumption that everyone's
machine starts off with the same setup, same security options, same
directory structure, etc... In other words, you would have to assume a
standard starting place. From experience over the twenty or so years that I
had direct involvement with DXbase, I doubt this would be the case. For
whatever reason, hams just like to be different. They seem to want to
change things from the norm all the time. It's just the way they are. So,
I'm skeptical to say the least. I also doubt that the directions would be
followed in a way that actually makes a dent on the number of folks who have
problems. There are countless examples of step by step instructions being
given for various things and the horror stories of those who thought they
were following them but didn't understand enough to realize when they had
made a mistake until it was a mess. What could be simpler than telling
someone to copy the hosts file from the DXbase folder into the necessary
Windows 7 folder? Yet how many times has this appeared on the reflector
with cries for help?
Maybe you're on to something, I'm just not sure.
