[Dxbase] Installing DXbase 2007 on Windows 7 64 bits

OK about the UAC level. Still there is a problem. Unpacking the attached .reg file is impossible on my W7 64 bit computer as long as the system consider this a harmful file. I use the Microsoft Essentials for virus protection. This might cause the trouble.
Anyhow, I unpacked the file on my W2000 computer, saved it on a memory stick and took it to my W7 machine.
With a click on the mouse it copied to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Scientific Solutions\Dxb2007 path.
Restarted my PC, but still I had the trial version message.
I had some of the same problems when installing 2006 on this system. I ran regedit and noted that the input from the 2007 key installed on a location different from the Dxbase 2006 installation, which is in path:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Scientific Solutions\Dxb2006
I added a Dxb2007 folder (Edit, new key) on the same level as Dxb2006, made a KEY (right click on the folder, New, string value) Renamed this KEY.
>From the first mentioned path I copied Key content (Left click on KEY, right click, change, ctrl C) and pasted it into the newly made key. (Right click on it, change, Ctrl V).
Then restart the computer. The trial message is gone.
Maybe the click-installed key ought to be removed from the register. So far it does cause not any harm.
Don't forget to set UAC to recommended level again.
I sincerely hope this can be done in a snip snap on the ver. 10

Hi Knut
The reason you are getting blocked like that is Windows 7 UAC security. This is a script that updates the registry and with the UAC setting you are using (which is the default one), it blocks you from doing that.
The method really does not work optimally in the world of Vista and Win 7 so its going to change in version 10.
The best thing to do is to temporarily lower your UAC setting for this exercise. Go to the Control Panel and click on the User Accounts applet. The resulting window will have a hyperlink at the bottom of the list called Change User Account Control settings so click on that.
The resulting window will have a slider for you to adjust the level of protection. Move the slider to the bottom (never notify). Then click the OK button.
Now do the .reg file. If you are needing to modify the reg file because you are using a 64 bit system, open Notepad and select Open. When you get the open file dialog window, down at the bottom beside where the File Name text area is, move the combo box from Text Documents (*.txt) to All Documents.
Then you should be able to see the reg file and make the required changes.

Installing DXbase 2007 on my 64 bits W7 computer is not as easy as could be.
Installing works fine until it comes to the .reg file.
Neal tells me to:
..
2. Unzip the .zip file to expose the .reg file.
3. Double click the .reg file and when asked if it's ok to store in registry, you should say yes.
..
When I try to unzip, Windows security warning appears: "Windows security warning: This file can be harmful. Access to this file has been blocked to better protect your computer" (Translated from my Norwegian W7 version.)
I try to open the attached .reg file in other editors (Notepad, Word) but I can't find the file, even if I look for all kind of files.
I guess there is a lock on the reg file editing in my system. How do I get around it?
This installation might have been easier, but maybe some skilful fellow ham can help?

Hello Jean
There are a few things that you should do outside of the normal way to
install DXBase 2007. These will not be needed when the next release comes
out but until then:
1. I would recommend to create a directory (eg. DXBase) at the root of your
C drive and install DXBase 2007 into it instead of accepting the default
location of C:\Program Files\Scientific Solutions\DXBase2007.
2. Once you have installed DXBase, open the directory you installed it in,
right-click the file called Hosts and select Copy. Then go to
C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc and paste the file there. This is needed
because Windows 7 will not the fill be installed there automatically.
3. Microsoft changed the format of Help files from the way DXBase has them,
so you will need to install their reader in order to access the help files.
You can download it here
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=166421 (
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=166421) . Install the progrram and
you should be set!
