All good recomendations. Peter I really like your idea . Like I said this isnt anything thats gonna happen right away as vista serves me well and all my programs run with no problems. The other thing is cash flow . If I happen to pick up a few side jobs ill stash the money if I can and maybe go ahead and do the upgrade. If I happen to get a real job in the future then it will be game on as they say :).. If I thought I really needed it now I just go buy it as the wife doesnt have a problem with that stuff but I have to remind myself im not working :).. In fact I think it was the day they released it she asked me if we needed it :)...
Im glad I posted this simply because now im a little bit smarter and that never hurts.
Thanks All

The biggest advantage of 64 bit is the ability to use as much RAM as you can
throw in the machine. If you put 4GB into a 32-bit box, you'll use at most 3
and a bit. If you put 8 gig in a 32-bit machine, you'll still only be able
to use 3 and a bit. If you put 8GB into a 64-bit OS, you'll access all 8
gigs. Also, in the coming couple of years, more and more apps will come in
64-bit versions. Having a "future-proof" box is, to me, a critical part of
having a reliable system.
My recommendation as an "IT guy," buy a new hard drive (since a mechanical
drive will eventually fail and drives are cheap to begin with) and do a
fresh load of Win7/64, then re-load all your old apps. If you want, you can
put your existing drive back into the system as a secondary disk, and since
it won't be re-formatted, you can move data from the old partition to the
new one.

Just playing around here today and i installed the upgrade advisor for Win 7
and it tells me I need the 32 bit upgrade?
I realize my machine has the 32 bit Vista system but why cant i go to the
win 7 64 bit ? My computer has an AMD 64 x2 dual core processor and its
2.8ghz wihh 3 gigs of memory ?
The on the other hand do I really need the 64 bit ?
All I use this machine for is internet stuff and logging and rig control .
Im not going to run out and buy the program just yet anyway but I was kinda
surprised on the info it gave me.
