[Dxbase] start sequence

Gary et all:
I didn't mean to start a firestorm of messages about the start-up, but it 
sure got a lot of guys thinking.
I run Win XP Home.
All my interfacing, radio and CW is done via a microHAM micro KEYER.
I'm afraid we can't blame Mr. Gates for this one. The operating system is 
returning an error code
saying the the device isn't working. Doesn't matter if it is a native Serial 
port or a USB to Serial Port adaptor.
It isn't working.
So that leaves it to the error handling routine in the application.
I have another contest logging program that displays a message, gives you a 
choice to continue or take action.
If you continue without any action and later decide to turn the radio on, 
there is a function in a menu to
re-initialize the radio interface.
In DXbase, I now turn the radio on, it powers the USB interface, then I 
bring up DXbase and
then turn the radio off and continue to do what I intended to do.
Interesting thing is that if I later turn the radio back on, DXbase picks it 
up and runs as if the radio was never turned off!!!

Upon further review...
I think Bill may be on to something here. As I've been reading the various
threads on this I suddenly remembered I upgraded(?) my operating system from
Win ME to Win XP a while back. I think the last time I saw an error message
about being unable to start communication with the radio I was running Win
ME. I use a PCMCIA dual serial slot card in my laptop for the radio
interface. Perhaps there is some difference in the way Mr. Gates
interrogates the serial card between the different operating systems? Or,
as others have suggested, if the interface is via a USB port through a
serial converter, rather than a true serial port, there may be other issues
being introduced. No clear answer, just more food for thought.
