VP8ROT is Rothera, 67.34 S x 68.08 W. Rothera Point in the Adelaide Island.
It's IOTA an-001
That makes it Antarctica.
But here's the rub. As the call is assigned to him, it was also legal in Falklands and a
number of the other islands in and near the Antarctic.
Which is exactly what happened on this last trip.
So you have to match what he said was his qth with the proper prefix.
A while back, many of the logging programs and a few of the various Award
organizations, used CE9 to indicate Antarctica. That became a 'convention'.
But now the ARRL DXCC desk chooses to use KC4.
When these situations happen to me, I just select the proper prefix from the drop down
list.
and say no when DXB asks if I want to 'map' this call to that prefix.
But if you sent in a CE9xx or a KC4xx card today, most likely it would be counted as any
part of the Antarctic area.
(some slight variation depending on who claimed sovereignty to some of the islands that
have distances such as to make them count as separate entities can enter into this
situation).
This is one of those situations where (the proper prefix varies with the expert you speak
to).
I'm not sure anyone totally understands the treaties, sovereignty issues, and political
claims to the areas down there.
Hope this helps, but probably just muddied the waters even more.
