My IBM T40 laptop is similar, in that it has only USB ports (no serial
ports), but instead of trying a USB solution I used a PCMCIA (PC-card)
outboard serial port and it works 100% with everything I've ever tried
using it on. I don't have DXBase loaded on the laptop, but I do rig control
with N1MM Logger for contesting and it's worked flawlessly. I've also used
this solution for non-ham-related functions that require a COM port. Hit
eBay and search for PCMCIA SERIAL PORT and see what comes up.
