[DXBase] adding a backup feature to DXBase

Sounds like something I ought to look at. While you were using DOS
PC's, I was with Motorola using Macs for years, then finally went
straight to Windows. I have a venerable old SCSI Zip100 with a PCMCIA
adapter, but the shack desktop PC has no SCSI port. Zip files on 1.6MB
floppies sneaker-networked between my basement shack and the second
floor study was the economically optimum solution :-)

George,
I'm backing up from one PC to another and a second drive. I have plenty
of
HD space on both. Hard drives have faster access times than floppies or
a
Zip drive. Makes sense to me.
I used to use batch files in the early days of DOS PCs. In fact, I use
to
start every applications program with one (to change directory, now
called
folder, execute the application, clear the screen when done, and return
to
the root directory). It is really fast. To me using a batch file to
backup
is the KISS principle, and I'm embarrassed I didn't think of it.
I haven't used a floppy in recent memory. I can copy files across the
network (actually a router and 2 or 3 PCs) and email files back and
forth to
work over a broadband connection. Life is pretty simple in at least this
respect! The rest should be so good.

Now I'm curious. I only have a single HD in my shack PC, but it's
networked with my workhorse laptop, where I keep a mirror copy of DXB
for printing labels and award applications. Do I understand that this
.bat approach will simultaneously backup DXB in both computers in
seconds? Seems even better than WinZip and floppies...

The batch file takes about three seconds to copy all of the files to my
second hard drive in the same PC and a second set of copies to a hard
drive
in a networked PC (the old notebook that runs AR-Cluster). I'm using a
shortcut on the desktop. It's so easy. I'm very appreciative to Tony
and
Bill.

Bill, I recall that post and its very detailed and complex steps. Isn't
it just as effective to compress the .mdb, .co and .ini files with
WinZip and export them to a floppy every so often/every contest?
Say yes, 'cause that's how I back up :-)

Couple days ago I posted a way to create .bat file to backup DXBase
critical
files.
My version was based on Tony Cash's batch file.
Well duh! Don't know why I didn't think of this.
But I used the Programs Menu feature to create a 'Backup' by Adding it
to
the Menu.
So I don't even have to close DXB.
For some reason while you can't Copy/Paste your .mdb file with DXBase
open
using Windows Explorer.
I can run the batch file from within DXBase and it will copy files with
no
problem.
I think Windows Explorer will not allow you to move a file currently
being
used by a program.
But the batch file, which runs in a Dos box, will.
Remember if you haven't backed up...it's not a question of IF. just a
matter
of WHEN!
