You are correct.
On Oct 3, 2001, I wrote to DXbase Headquarters the following:
"In my reading of the help file while trying to figure out the problem
reported before, I saw the following:
"Remember that QSOs prior to 1975 are not eligible for band/mode awards.
DXbase automatically marks these QSOs as not Valid for the mode when you
log the QSO record. Therefore, these QSOs will not be selected by DXbase
when you request a specific mode award such as CW."
I believe that this is somewhat misleading. "Phone" seems to me to be a
"mode"; there is after all a phone DXCC. QSOs prior to 1975 are most
assuredly valid for the phone DXCC as well as band awards.
Maybe a clarification in the next rev?"

Don't know how it happened but if they aren't checked, they won't be
selected. And, if you manually check the select boxes, you must remember
to initialize tables before trying to do an award.
