Yes it does handle split...but not exactly as I would like, thus I created
the VFO A ONLY variation when I went thru and speeded up and made other
improvements to the definitions for the ICOM 781, the 756, 756 Pro and 756
Pro 2. When I say not exactly as I would like what I mean is that it
doesn't do Dual Watch, nor is it capable of actually telling if the radio
has been put into split by hand, thus reading back split cannot be
guaranteed to be correct. But if you use the regular 756Pro definition you
will be reasonably satisfied and it will set split, but you cannot read it
back and have confidence in it, nor can you run dual watch under computer
control.
I am very disappointed with ICOM for offering a bewildering set of options
for controlling and radio via the RS232 port, yet they left out the issue of
reading split and reading dual watch. I have taken it up with them via
e-mail and in person, but short of setting up a picket line at the ICOM
offices in Japan I don't think I could get their attention. Want to join me
in Tokyo with sheets of cardboard and a felt tip pen?
If perfection in the interface is what you desire, then don't buy a ICOM 756
series! But I guess you already have, and with this one blemish it's a very
nice rig. I worked the CQWWCW this weekend with it and was completely
satisfied..although the filters are not quite as good as the old 781,
however people don't zero beat worth a darn in a contest and so the 'blow
by' in the software digital filers can actually be an advantage.
