Did you remember to change your clocks? Countries who observe Daylight Saving Time (DST), which took place on Sunday, March 12th, are now expected to move their "local clocks" backward 1 hour on Sunday, November 5th, from 2:00 AM local time to 1:00 AM. In 2018, Day- light Saving Time (DST) will again go into effect on Sunday, March 11th, at 2:00 AM local time. For the history and details about ST and DST, as well as an interesting map of the world (showing the countries who observe DST), see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_time http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daylight_saving_time http://www.timeanddate.com/time/dst/2018.html ADDED NOTE: Hopefully, all amateur radio operators know not to change their GMT/UTC/ZULU clocks. However, since most operators usually set their computers to local time, some may have to change their settings on "some" ham radio software (ex. logging, propagation, DXTelnet, etc..) programs. SU9, EGYPT. Nacho, EA1AK/EA7TN, will be active as SU9JG from Cairo (Zone 34) during the CQWW DX CW Contest (November 25-26th) as a Single-Op/ Single-Band (15m)/Low-Power entry. QSL via LoTW or EA5GL. Lance, W7GJ, reported to OPDX the following on October 27th: "I finally returned home from Australia this week, ending the 6 week DXpedition to both VK9C and VK9X to activate them both for the first time on 6m EME. A record 86 contacts were made via 6m EME from VK9C, more than any previous 6m EME operation. Then I completed 106 6m EME con- tacts from VK9X. QSL cards are on order and will be mailed directly to all contacts. Many more stations were copied, but not worked. Daily updates with details were posted on the DXpedition website: http://www.bigskyspaces.com/w7gj/Indian%20Ocean%202017.htm I attribute some of the great success to the new receiver setup I used on this operation - an ARR pre-amplier ahead of a DEMI 50 MHz band pass filter feeding an RTL-Dongle used with G4ELI's SDR-Console Version 3 software driving K1JT's WSJT10 version of JT65A for EME. Thanks to all who put in the time and effort to try for an ATNO via the long path of half a million miles! Hope to see you all again from another rare one next year! .... Adrian, G0KOM, who was expected to be active as ZC4MK last week, announced the following on October 27th (after OPDX went to print last week): "Due to my father in law being admitted to hospital here in the UK, I have had to delay flying to Cyprus, I'm looking at a couple of weeks time, my stuff is all packed and ready to go, I just need to reschedule my flights, I'm gutted I'm going to miss the CQ WW, but family comes first at this time, I will pop up the revised dates in the next day or two when I've finalized my flights." Adrian has posted the following two updates (October 28th and 29th) on QRZ.com: "Revised flights booked, will arrive in Cyprus on the afternoon of the 5th of December and be there for a week, departing on the morning of the 12th." "Due to the delay in my arrival the upside is I have a chance to sort some extra antennas, so I would like to try and at least make some sort of an attempt on 160m, looking for any advice as the best way forward, bearing in mind I won't have a huge amount of luggage space. I will be taking a Cushcraft R7 (10m - 40m) and possibly a 12m Spiderbeam pole for possibly an 80/40m dipole, so what are the options for top band, having never used the band before I'm open to suggestions. I have already lost the cost of my first lot of flights as changing the dates would actually have cost more than booking new flights (Thanks Ryanair), so I am really conscious of costs now." -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- TO BE ADDED TO THE OPDX MAILING LIST -- Click or send requests to: Help: Subscribe: Unsubscribe: OPDX WORLD-WIDE WEB HOME PAGE (provided by John, K8YSE): http://www.papays.com/opdx.html ALSO VISIT THE NORTHERN OHIO DX ASSOCIATION'S WEB PAGES AT: http://www.nodxa.org/ http://www.facebook.com/NorthernOhioDxAssociation -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- * All excerpts and distribution of "The OPDX Bulletin" are granted as long as KB8NW/OPDX/BARF80 receives credit. ** To contribute DX info, please send via InterNet Mail to: OR OR Information can now be faxed to the following phone line at: 1-419-828-7791 (F A X only!) /EXIT -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Tedd Mirgliotta, KB8NW - E-mail addresses: Editor of the Ohio/Penn DX Bulletin (OPDX - DXer's Tool of Excellence) President of the "Northern Ohio DX Association" (NODXA) DX Chairman for the "Northern Ohio Amateur Radio Society ARRL Assistant Director of the Great Lakes Division Sysop of the "Basic Amateur Radio Frequency BBS" (BARF80.ORG) From kb8nw at barf80.nshore.org Sun Nov 12 13:40:00 2017 From: kb8nw at barf80.nshore.org (Tedd Mirgliotta (KB8NW)) Date: 2017年11月12日 13:40:00 -0500 Subject: [DX] Ohio/Penn DX Bulletin #1339 Message-ID: <489013.19575.bm@smtp111.sbc.mail.gq1.yahoo.com> SB DX @ WW < KB8NW $OPDX.1339 Ohio/Penn DX Bulletin No. 1339 The Ohio/Penn DX PacketCluster DX Bulletin No. 1339 BID: $OPDX.1339 November 13, 2017 Editor Tedd Mirgliotta, KB8NW Provided by BARF80.ORG (Cleveland, Ohio) Written/Sent from Strongsville, Ohio Thanks to the Northern Ohio Amateur Radio Society, Northern Ohio DX Association, Ohio/Penn PacketCluster Network, AB5K & the AR TelNet Clusters Network, NJ1Q & W1AW, NG3K & ADXO, W3UR & The Daily DX, W6NV, W6SZN, K8GI, K8YSE, W8GEX & 60m DX News, WD8IOU, DL1SBF, DL7BC, DL7UXG & The DX News Letter, DxCoffee.com, DXNews.com, DX-World.Net, ES1CW, F6AJA & Les Nouvelles DX, I1JQJ/IK1ADH & 425 DX News, I2MQP & DX Italia News, ON5SWA, OZ6OM & 50 MHz DX News, Radio Club Argentino (LU4AA), RSGB IOTA Web Site, Sixitalia Weekly, VA3RJ & ICPO, VHF-DX-Portal (MMMonVHF) and YO3JW for the following DX information. Kip Edwards, W6SZN, Secretary and Director of the Yasme Foundation, sent out the following: [edited] YASME FOUNDATION EXCELLENCE AWARDS AND SUPPORTING GRANT The Yasme Excellence Award is presented to individuals and groups who, through their own service, creativity, effort and dedication, have made a significant contribution to amateur radio. The contribution may be in recognition of technical, operating or organizational achievement, as all three are necessary for amateur radio to grow and prosper. The Yasme Excellence Award is in the form of a cash grant and an individually- engraved crystal globe. The Board of Directors of The Yasme Foundation is pleased to announce the latest recipients of the Yasme Excellence Award: Dayton Amateur Radio Association (DARA) -- to pick up the world's largest amateur radio event on a few months notice and move it to a completely different facility is a daunting task. That it went so smoothly was a testament to the extraordinary efforts of the 600 volunteers and event leadership. Paul Verhage, KD4STH, and Bill Brown, WB8ELK -- for their leadership and continued technical innovation in amateur radio high-altitude bal- looning (ARHAB - ). While not the traditional means of introduction, ARHAB is exposing hundreds of students to amateur radio through an interest in science experimen- tation. Both have written extensively about ARHAB and have contributed material to the ARRL Handbook. Nathaniel Frissell, W2NAF and Magda Moses, KM4EGE -- for creating and leading the HamSCI (Ham Radio Science Citizen Investigation) organization that sponsored the Solar Eclipse QSO Party (SEQP). The SEQP was the largest amateur radio experiment ever devised and generated the world's most extensive set of HF propagation observations during an eclipse. Beyond the SEQP, HamSCI is attracting the interest of professional/ academic researchers such as from numerous universities, the Arecibo Radio Observatory in Puerto Rico, MIT?s Haystack Observatory, and HAARP facility in Alaska. The WSJT Development Team -- initially the work of Joe Taylor, K1JT, the WSJT software is now maintained and extended by a team of developers led by Bill Somerville, G4WJS; Steve Franke, K9AN; Greg Beam, KI7MT; Michael Black, W9MDB; Edson Pereira, PY2SDR; and Nico Palermo, IV3NWV; along with Joe Taylor. Their latest digital mode, FT8, combines the extraordinary low-SNR performance of JT9 and JT65 with a much faster decoding and exchange process. Dale Hughes, VK1DSH, -- for his excellent work as Chairman of the Amateur Working Group in ITU-R Working Party 5A and as Chairman of the sub Working Group dealing with a worldwide 60 meter amateur allocation during World Radiocommunication Conference 2015. The Board also made a grant to Gary Pearce, KN4AQ, for his production and distribution of videos of interest to the amateur radio community through Ham Radio Now and YouTube. * * * * * The Yasme Foundation is a not-for-profit corporation organized to support scientific and educational projects related to amateur radio, including DXing (long distance communication) and the introduction and promotion of amateur radio in developing countries. Alex, PY2WAS, 2018 Macao Dxpedition Team Leader, sent out the following press release on November 15th [edited]: After 8 months of preparation for this DXpedition, we are proud to announce a DXpedition to Macao (XX9) from the night of March 9th, 2018 to March 17th, 2018. Although this DXpedition does not count on donations, participants will be supporting all costs for transporting 215 kgs of equipments, as well as costs with air tickets, accommodation, meals and so on. The team will be formed by Bom/XX9LT, Leo/PP1CZ, Junior/PR7AB, Claudio/ PY2MC, Alex/PY2SEX, Alex/PY2WAS, Miguel/PY3MM, Fernando/PY4BZ, Herminio/ PY5HSD, Beto/PY6RT and Jim/PY7XC. CTT (Post Office and Telecommunications Agency of Macao) has not confirmed our callsign yet, but all forms have already been signed and submitted and Bom is supporting the team with it locally. It is expected for the next days and will be communicated accordingly. This team plans to work from 10m to 80m. 160m may be eventually worked as a non-priority band. Three stations will work 24 hours, provided that 1 station will be focusing digital modes, especially RTTY and FT8. We will be counting on 6 antennas (2 beams, 2 verticals, 1 folded dipole and 1 sloper double bazooka). There will be a spare transceiver in case of replacement need. This DXpedition will count on real time updating log to ClubLog. OQRS system at ClubLog will be made available to QSL orders by bureau or direct under the management of PP1CZ. Thanks to Tony/PY2DY, Fernando/PY2LED, Ric/PY2PT, Carlos/PY2VM and Fred/ PY2XB for all the support they provided to this team. It is important to highlight that a bootcamp testing operation was held in the first week of September/2017 to test all equipments and potential interactions among the stations at the super contest site of PX2A. Additional care will be taken with preferable QRGs to prevent overlapping as regards other big DXpeditions at that time, such as Spratly Island and Easter Island. Thanks to all ham radio community for their enthusiasm and hunting this team in the air. 73, 2018 Macao Dxpedition (Macao and Brazil ops) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- TO BE ADDED TO THE OPDX MAILING LIST -- Click or send requests to: Help: Subscribe: Unsubscribe: OPDX WORLD-WIDE WEB HOME PAGE (provided by John, K8YSE): http://www.papays.com/opdx.html ALSO VISIT THE NORTHERN OHIO DX ASSOCIATION'S WEB PAGES AT: http://www.nodxa.org/ http://www.facebook.com/NorthernOhioDxAssociation -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- * All excerpts and distribution of "The OPDX Bulletin" are granted as long as KB8NW/OPDX/BARF80 receives credit. ** To contribute DX info, please send via InterNet Mail to: OR OR Information can now be faxed to the following phone line at: 1-419-828-7791 (F A X only!) /EXIT -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Tedd Mirgliotta, KB8NW - E-mail addresses: Editor of the Ohio/Penn DX Bulletin (OPDX - DXer's Tool of Excellence) President of the "Northern Ohio DX Association" (NODXA) DX Chairman for the "Northern Ohio Amateur Radio Society ARRL Assistant Director of the Great Lakes Division Sysop of the "Basic Amateur Radio Frequency BBS" (BARF80.ORG) From kb8nw at barf80.nshore.org Fri Nov 24 10:10:00 2017 From: kb8nw at barf80.nshore.org (Tedd Mirgliotta (KB8NW)) Date: 2017年11月24日 10:10:00 -0500 Subject: [DX] Ohio/Penn DX Bulletin #1341 Message-ID: <44494.60407.bm@smtp113.sbc.mail.gq1.yahoo.com> SB DX @ WW < KB8NW $OPDX.1341 Ohio/Penn DX Bulletin No. 1341 The Ohio/Penn DX PacketCluster DX Bulletin No. 1341 BID: $OPDX.1341 November 27, 2017 Editor Tedd Mirgliotta, KB8NW Provided by BARF80.ORG (Cleveland, Ohio) Written/Sent from Strongsville, Ohio Thanks to the Northern Ohio Amateur Radio Society, Northern Ohio DX Association, Ohio/Penn PacketCluster Network, AB5K & the AR TelNet Clusters Network, NJ1Q & W1AW, W2GB, NG3K & ADXO, W3OA, W3UR & The Daily DX, W6SZN, K8GI, K8PGJ, K8YSE, W8GEX & 60m DX News, W9ILY, N0TG, 4X1VF, DL1SBF, DL7UXG & The DX News Letter, DxCoffee.com, DXNews.com, DX-World.Net, ES1CW, F6AJA & Les Nouvelles DX, I1JQJ/IK1ADH & 425 DX News, I2MQP & DX Italia News, OZ6OM & 50 MHz DX News, Pete Rayer & ISWL, RSGB IOTA Web Site, Sixitalia Weekly, and VA3RJ & ICPO for the following DX information. ** EDITOR'S SPECIAL NOTICE: This week's bulletin was sent out earlier than normal to accommodate the late CQWW DX CW Contest announcements. The following was posted November 22nd, [edited]: Our sea container should now be between the ports of San Antonio, Chile and its destination, Punta Arenas, Chile. The logistics have at times been confounding, but we are actually ahead of schedule with our shipping. We have our license and callsign for our maritime mobile operation on the way to Bouvet. One of the problems with shipboard operation is static charge build up on antennas from the winds and precipitation. This is a particular problem with antennas that are not at DC ground. Having a transceiver exposed to this hazard can be disastrous for the radio. We are aware of the issue, and are instituting ways of dealing with this threat. Our band plan is now posted on this website: http://www.bouvetdx.org/band-plan-frequencies The most recent propagation predictions continue to support the patterns shown in the videos on our propagation page. FT8 adds a new dimension to DXpeditions. We will use this mode, but not as a PRIMARY mode. We will only use FT8 when we cannot use the standard, higher rate modes. We have outlined our FT8 operating plan on the Band Plan page of this website. Please visit this page if you intend to try contacting 3Y0Z on FT8. It is ?must? reading. 4L, GEORGIA. Look for Yuri, UT1FG, to be activating some water grids for the satellite operators. John, K8YSE, reports, "Yuri, UT1FG/MM, is back to sea on the Vessel Seahorse. It is currently sailing from Algiers to Morocco where it will load cargo. The plan is to sail to a USA port in the Gulf to be determined. There are quite a few ships named Seahorse. The MMSI number is 538007572. Yuri is using the Elk antenna, but only has RG58 coax feeding it. Even so he reports working K3SZH on AO-7 today (Nov. 23rd). If he doesn't find coax in Morocco, perhaps we can get some coax to him when he arrives in a USA port. So he is likely to do better on a Mode B satellite rather than one with a UHF downlink. He has keps for AO-91, AO-85 and CAS-4B. Please wait for a while before sending your logsheets. He will likely be able to mail QSLs when he docks in the USA." AO-91 Commissioned, Declared Open for Amateur Use! The ARRL Web page reports: "AMSAT-NA's latest Amateur Radio CubeSat, RadFxSat (Fox-1B), now known as AO-91, has been opened for general use. AMSAT Engineering officially announced that AO-91 was ready for use at 0650 UTC on Thanks- giving Day, November 23.
