One correction, the FL-2100z uses positive voltage keying (unlike the
FL-2100 ad FL2100B). Unfortunately, instead of a single relay the
FL2100Z has three relays and a "speed up" circuit which is likely to
result in more current that the FT897D TX Gnd can handle.

I do not have access to the FT-897D Service Manual/schematics but the
Operating Manual says (page 10):
 > The “TX GND” T/R control line is a transistor “open collector”
 > circuit, capable of handling positive amplifier relay coil voltages
 > of up to +50V DC and current of up to 400 mA.
I would recommend connecting a meter capable of measuring current from
the center pin of the RY jack and chassis of the FL-2100Z and measuring
the specific current. You may be able to switch it directly but only if 
it is significantly less than 400 mA.
If you are using an intermediate relay, simply make sure that it has
a low current (high resistance) coil so the FT-897 sees a low current
on the TX GND pin.

Unfortunately, TX REQ is PTT input (e.g. for a foot switch) not an
output for keying an amplifier.
