[Dx-qsl] Where's The Rhythm?

I agree with you 100% Rob,
When the DX says NA plse standby I am going to call EU for 10 minutes then
you know what to expect. You can get a cup of coffee, make a head break,
whatever. But when the DX just keeps calling UP EU you see comments on the
cluster complaining it is an EU fest, whatever. When the DX calls EU for
hours without a break to work a few NA stations every so often it is really
frustrating. Then the LIDS start putting a carrier on his freq, etc.
Also what I like to hear is when the DX starts a call he completes it and
tells the others to stand by. Such as I am calling the K7 ONLY, all other
stand by. With my rig I can listen to the DX Tx freq in one headset earpiece
and my Tx freq in the other. I can find who the DX is responding to and wait
for the contact to be complete and call on the same freq. But too often
others do the same thing but instead of waiting they start calling while the
contact is still in progress. This is just plain bad behavior and bullying.
It is worse in contests such as the CQWWDX where the DX is not working split
and the LIDS call right over the top of the DX when he is answering a call.
There is really a proper rhythm such as the DX says QRZ or gives his call
and there is a certain window to throw out your call and wait to see who he
answers. But then there are the LIDS who have the uncanny way of throwing
out their call just when the DX calls someone. Well, that just hurts
everyone because the DX can't hear them when he is already transmitting and
everyone one else can't hear who is being called. That means the DX has to
make a second call to make the contact "K7ACZ are you there?" And it seems
these same LIDS do the same thing over and over. I have been on the DX side
a few times and have told people the W4 I am not calling you, I am calling
the K7 but the W4 keeps calling. And I scribble the offending call on my
scratch paper so I never answer him in the future. I was an airborne radio
op/navigator in US Coast Guard C-130's for 25 yrs. There would be big
searches where our C-130 would be On Scene Commander and would be
communicating with several surface vessels, several helicopters and maybe
other agencies aircraft. We had to maintain discipline and a certain rhythm
in our calls to effectually communicate.

Yes the DX sets the rules and makes the pileup behave, but the DX can't stop
people from incessantly calling.
My recent experience at 5J0R was that there is always someone that calls and
calls without listening.. then when you give them the 5/9 they keep
calling.. I guess the SP1 who called me during my whole shift on 20 mts is
still calling...
The problem with most people is that they don't pay attention. I would
clearly say listening for NA 5 up.. and people from Europe would keep
calling.
Now what I do agree is that you need to keep the pileup informed of what is
happening or what you are doing, I call that respect for the pileup. For
instance I would say I will work North America for 30 minutes, then Eu for
30 minutes ... then when a Europe caller came in I would politely say I
would work Europe in X minutes. I think respecting the pileup is essential..
things like people saying "thank you for picking up my call" would be
replied to with "thank you for calling us" and things like that..
I would spend equal amounts of time on NA , Europe and JA with the
occassional call for ZL/VKs or South America..or Asia outside Japan.. I
could feel the appreciation and respect from the pileup. Yes the DX sets
the rules.. most of the time. Respecting you audience is basic.. when the
pileup feels injustice it begins to complain.. and its understandable.
