Guys
I've just received this e-mail from James, 9J2CA for whom I act as QSL
manager and who is one of only 2 (maybe 3) stations active from Zambia.
I am sure we can all sympathise with his situation and frustration. I
will be interested in any feedback or suggestions as to how James may be
able to deal with the situation as it will be a great shame if he does
decide to give up the hobby as a result of the bad behaviour of the
minority.
"Sorry to have to complain AGAIN about very bad QRM from an Italian
station (IT9KDB) which actually lead to him sending insults and abuse on
top the station I was TRYING to copy (ZL1WN) the only ZL that I have
TRIED to work on digi mode. (Olivia)
This mode gives virtually a 100% print, not unlike sending an e-mail,
but without the expense of the Internet connection to send that e-mail,
so there was no excuse for not being able to see that I was in the
middle of a QSO and not wanting to have him repeatedly call me on top of
the ZL. I was also sending the ZL's call several times to indicate the
station being worked at the time.
I was getting very upset with this type of "rubbish" that is getting
increasingly worse as the days go by and told this "fool" to QSY, get
off the QRG, You are causing QRM, only have a full "blast" of Italian
abuse, insults, the whole 9 yards on top of the final over that ZL1WN
was trying to send; also no chance to work another weaker ZL that I
think I heard under this nonsense that this station was causing.
I looked up the call on QRZ.COM and found an e-mail address (there is a
picture of some kid playing with the radio equipment - probably reflects
the mentality of the so-called operator) and sent of fairly "controlled"
response/query to this character asking for explanation; just got back
rubbish about not understanding English???
This is really getting too much now Phil and like most of the ZE's/Z2's
that used to say the same thing some years ago; the reason why not many
were not bothering with the "DX", that I'm finding the same thing now.
This digi mode seems to have attracted the worst crowd as few of these
EU's seem to understand English (they should be on VHF only) and use
only the "macros" which have probably been set-up for them by someone
who has the basic understanding. They only know that this macro is the
first one to push, this macro is the second one to push and this is the
sign-off one to push because if I were to "fire" a question at them,
they are totally lost!!!
Getting on for time to work the ZS's only again - I went through a
similar situation in 1985 and got fed up with this "big deal thing" to
work DX and spent most of the time working ZS and local stations until
coming up here to 9J - Land (except for the USA stations that were
coming through on the Long Path and now not heard); pity! But this type
of thing will discourage the few African stations from bothering with
these DX stations all together - they will have to wait for the odd
expat or AID worker that may be licensed to give them a QSO and a much
sought after QSL card!!!
Sorry OM, but really, enough is enough; wish I had the money to be
import some of the fantastic aircraft/boat modeling kits that I have
seen on the Internet; hang up the keyboard/key/mic for 10 years or so!!"
73 for now
