Pete:
I appreciate very much your taking the time to comment. Let me assure
you that my post was not meant as a knock on SWL's in general. In
fact I mentioned the ISWL precisely because it has such an honourable
reputation and tradition. I was an enthusiastic SWL myself before I
got my ham ticket and continue to do SWLing on the FM and medium wave
broadcast bands. I have always answered SWL cards promptly, whether
through the bureau or direct, despite the fact that I am an avid
contester and make between 20,000 and 40,000 QSOs each year.
I was simply hoping to highlight the activities of one bad apple so
that organisations such as yours can be on guard in the case that
applications for awards might be received from him. Our bureau
receives hundreds of cards per month from SWLs and practically all of
them are passed through to the destinees without anything untoward
calling attention to them. But this fellow has been a notable and
frequent exception.
Let me re-iterate, as far as I am concerned, SWLing is a wonderful and
honourable activity, and I am of the belief that over 99 percent of
the SWLs out there are absolutely honest and trustworthy.
