We still have dollar coins (and a new series is just starting to be
distributed) but they never have been that popular, so dollar notes
are still around. Everytime the authorities mention getting rid of
the notes there is a big hew and cry and the politicians quash the
idea. About the only place I see them is as change from the Post
Office vending machines. Our neighbors to the north have one- and
two-dollar coins (loonies and toonies), however. I recall that you
Brits no longer have one pound notes and I don't think the E.U. has
ever issued the one or two Euro denominations as anything but coins.
