And just as important, what's the easiest way for the QSL manager to handle this without sacrificing another piece of what little sanity they may have left?

Speaking personally, I would quite happily [at least on the surface -
smile>] accept an e-mail request stating your new address along the
lines of.....
If it is not too much trouble, and the cards have not been sent yet,
could you please amend the address on my envelope to read
Ron c/o Alcatraz <evil grin> or wherever.
Of course a lot relies on the current mental state of the Manager,
what sort of day he [she] has had, which side of the bed [*] they got
out of and whether they have already stuck stamps on the original
envelope.
We are, I like to think, in the main a helpful bunch, and at 4,000
miles plus you won't hear the screams of anguish
[*] It may also depend on 'whose' bed it was.
