If you can't imagine software being so "dumb", think of CT (contest logging)
without radio control. You need to use ALT-F1/F2 to change bands and (I think)
CTRL-F1/F2 to change modes. By sorting the cards in band then mode order, it
minimizes the use of these keystrokes.
It's a lot less typing than having to enter the band/mode for every QSO, but
also less flexible.
