If any of you have confirmed a QSO, direct, with Apollo, you probably have
received the following. If not, I repeat the message he has inserted into
my return envelope. I have talked to a couple of these guys and wondered
what was going on.
"Dear Friend,
I would like to demand your help to a problem that I confront. Recently in
the new regulation that made the Ministry, because the men that work there
dont know tht Mount Athos is special DXCC-Country, give the "SY" as a
special call sign to everyone who wants it. So there is a confusion to
radio amateur world , who believe that those who use this call sign are from
Mount Athos. Many Greek radio amateurs sayed their views to the Ministry,
but they ignored them. I would be grateful if you send a message to the
Ministry (E-mail: yme at otenet.gr) asking them to stop issuing the "SY" as a
special prefix, and give it exclusively to Mount Athos. Thanks beforehand
for your assistance. From Mount Athos, the "Garden of Virgin Mary" I send
you my best wishes. God bless you."
I agree that this may indeed work, having lived and worked in Athens for
about 3 years, I know public opinion does play a part in ministry affairs.
I have sent my response to them and ask each of you to look at it as a bit
that we can do to straighten out this prefix mess we are findiing ourselves
in, not just in Greece, but worldwide. Wish I knew enough French to give
them a piece of my mind about their island assignments. And the FCC is not
so innocent on this either, with their assigning idiotic calls to some of
our island posessions.
