Some tips to follow when planning color QSL cards. If you have a 35mm slide
that you favor you should be able to find a local printing service bureau
that can do the scan and provide you a cmyk tif at 300dpi at the size you want
the image printed (that's what you want for a printer). This scan can be
provided you on a CD-R with a proof. I have little contact with the QSL printers but
most commercial printers can provide this service. The same service is
provided for a color print. (cmyk stands for cyan, magenta, yellow, and black; the
four colors used to print those great cards)
For digital photography, provide the printer with an electronic file. Do
not send an inkjet print for the printer to use as orginal art. You will mostly
likely not be satisfied. You can make color - brightness - contrast changes on
your computer but keep in mind that most of us don't have a calibrated
monitor at home. Most files I receive are too dark and require adjustment. Printers
perfer tif files although high resolution jpeg files (uncompressed) are ok.
Don't worry about converting the files from rgb color (the color use by the
monitor) to cmyk color. Most printers are used to doing this and normally perfer
to make adjustments in rgb before converting to cmyk. Ask for a color proof
prior to printing if available. Earlier comments on the reflector are correct in
suggesting use of the highest resolution available on your digital camera.
Many times you may want to crop the photo to show only a small portion. Printers
need all the pixels they can get.
Sorry I can't provide the name of printer for QSL cards but I hope this may
help some. Don't hesitate to email me with any questions. Good luck and hope I
work whoever and receive one of those fab cards.
